Sorry I missed that information in the mailing and just thought i'd check on the forums. I totally understand your position though. Iv'e tried out the demo and think it's looking great and will speed up my workflow alot! i'll get a new license ordered asap
And as you are many to be confused, here is some more detailed explanations.
Polygonal was in charge of the communication, marketing and selling of my software among others things for many years. All along these years, aware people was constantly asking "why a dongle ? why so much expensive ? why so few communication ? why outdated website? why awkward naming like 'Fraternaware' and 'Unfold3D Magic Fairy'", etc... And I personally even had to do some of their part of the job myself. I created and updated the facebook page, the youtube channel and others things that they judged "unuseful" to do.
After the v9 release in 2015, because of things they did that I personally found dishonest, I felt really decided to build my own company and own team. Since the first legal instance statued that Rizom-Lab has the rights, and since we own the brand, the logo, the domain, and the source code of the new versions, we see the following years in a beautiful light.
About the next version they are talking about on their website, they may hire new people, train them, then perhaps do something using the old v9 source code as a base, but they are not allowed to use newer developments that I did that are present in Maya and of course not the last ones present in the Virtual Spaces and Real Space version.
So you may wait for their release if you want, or simply take some months of Unfold3D Virtual Space in Rent-To-Own and do not re-order after if you prefer. Actually their hypothetic new version does not worry us a lot, excluding the fact it confuses many people. I will be perhaps looking pretentious, but the true is that I wrote the several hundred thousand of the Unfold3D source code base (all versions since the first version I made in 2003) and I have hundreds of ideas to make them evolve in a right way.
I hope that people will be confident and follow us, in a any case we are extremely motivated
Yes thanks a lot for the clarification Remi! well I am really encouraged by your response to users on the forums as I hadn't had a single update or any communication with polygonal since I bought in 2015!
Keep up the good work! i'll get an order in for VS
I'm a long time user of Unfold and I've been praising it to all my co-workers in all the companies I had the pleasure to work with. I have already installed the demo version and I'm really pleased with the changes you introduced. The new features are amazing and your new business model and pricing made me think : "Finally! No Dongle non-sense!" when I watched your release trailer.
When I searched Unfold3D on google today, the top result brought me to Polygonal Design and I got really confused with their header. I am glad that you took the time to update your homepage as well to clear things up. I know have a better understanding of the situation and it saddens me that a dishonest organization is clinging on to your hard work over the years.
I can see Unfold really taking off with this new pricing and the rent-to-buy licensing. I think this is a really smart way to approach things, a bit like Allegorithmic is doing business (another cool french company!). My only bit of criticism would be to hire a community manager who is fluent in English. Not only he/she could help to do damage-control with Polygonal Design on the forums and social media, but could help with the Youtube videos voice-over. Please don't take offense but your speaking English pales in comparison to your coding skills and that was the only thing that wasn't on par with the super slick presentation of this new version of Unfold.
Once again, I think that if you continue to mix your killer updates with a top-notch costumer service ala Allegorithmic, you will get the success you rightfully deserve!
Bonne continuation et merci d'avoir pris la décision de lacher ceux qui freinaient votre succès!
Thank you for taking the time to say me all of this.
About Polygonal header, yes that creates confusion for sure. It it is difficult to answer calmly in presence of such a thing, but now that an official communication has been done, lets focus on UV mapping, and no more in debates that could worsen the things.
You make me regret my English classes I used to make tutorials using subtitles for the previous versions, but many people was writing me "why no sound?", so I decided to put my voice. Here is the result: a cheesy voice. I would however want to know if it is at least understandable ? Please answer yes.
It is! Don't get me wrong, I can understand most of everything, especially because I'm French and used to the accent. But I think a native speaker would make the demo go a little bit smoother and possibly shorter, which is always better when it comes to tutorial videos in my opinion.
